routed ipv6 with radvd

By Truman Boyes · · 1 min read

I tweaked with a Juniper NS5GT running 5.4r11 for an hour or so to get it to setup a tunnel to Hurricane Electric. The IPv6 support for manual IPv6in4 tunnels is still a bit difficult to setup and I found that because HE.NET provides a /64 routed p2p link and additionaly provides a /48 upon request, the routing is a little more involved. I might fire the box up again and make it another advertising router but in the short term I switched everything over to a Gentoo linux box on this side of the tunnel, fired up RADVD with the appropriate configuration and then bingo we had full ipv6 routing from OS X Leopard via autoconfig addresses.

From the iTerm on OS X:

[tboyes @ squidrock.local : ~]>ifconfig en1                                             [16:11:49 on 08-09-18 : s003]
en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

inet 192.168.0.208 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
inet6 2001:470:8859:beef:21f:5bff:fece:280a prefixlen 64 autoconf

A traceroute to www.ietf.org:

Script to setup tunnels to Hurricane Electric:

inanna scripts # cat ipv6-tunnel-route2.sh
ip tunnel add he-ipv6 mode sit remote x.x.x.x local y.y.y.y ttl 255
ip link set he-ipv6 up
