yeah yeah

Picked up some new components and finally got around to building a new computer. A PC?! Yeah why not, as it seems like the right choice to run a whole bunch of VMware instances or maybe even some Xen instances for some various projects I am working on at home. I ended up choosing the following items to build the box:

  • 1 OverclockerNZ mid tower case (black)
  • 2 x A-Data 1×1GB, DDR2-800, PC2-6400, CL5, DIMM
  • 1 x Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3 Motherboard, Socket AM2
  • 2 x Seagate Barracuda ST3320620AS Hard Disk Drive, 320GB, 7200rpm, 16384KB Cache, SATA-2
  • 1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ CPU, 2.8GHz, Socket AM2, 32/64-Bit, Retail pack with fan
  • 1 x Asus DRW-1814BL DVD Writer, DVD 16R/8W/8RW, CD 48R/48W/32RW, Internal, IDE, Black, Retail
  • 1 x Asus EN7300GT Silient/HTD/256M Video Card, GeForce 7300 GT, 256MB, DDR2, PCIe-16, TV out, DVI, HDTV

Jenny and I put this little box together; which was interesting because the last PC that I built was a AMD 900Mhz; things have certainly changed quite a bit: SATA, etc … So I got around to installing CentOS 5 64bit as the base OS and the Xen kernel. This of course required burning out 7 CD ISO images, fortunately a friend had copied disk sets 1-4 to my hard drive, and I only had to grab a few more from the local mirror in NZ. The box is running great, the only issue is that the fans are noisy. Next step is to put it in the closet and close the door.

In a few days heading up to Phuket, Thailand for some meetings.
